Beowulf, probably composed in the eight century A.D., is an immensely exciting heroic epic dealing with the exploits of a Scandinavian warrior-prince. But there's much more to it than its thrilling narrative of struggles against half-human monsters and dragons; Beowulf is also a work of philosophical depth and stylistic subtlety. Written by a Christian poet for an ostensibly Christian audience, Beowulf is yet demonstrably a product of the so-called Dark Ages, reflecting the life and outlook of a highly sophisticated pagan culture.
