Written when Pasternak was forty, Safe Conduct puzzled many readers in Russia and again when it appeared in English, because its isolated, sharp impressions and its juxtapositions seemed to deny chronology, but at least one critic recognized it as "the most original, employing new techniques of great importance." Safe Conduct tells of Pasternak's youthful studies of composition, of philosophy in Germany, and the development of a personal integrity through war and revolution and new fashions in poetry; a great person is seen developing.
